History

Abuelita Hostel is a privately owned company and is run by the Versfeld-Family. We have recently decided to renovate the farm house into a hostel where guests can enjoy our warm hospitality.

We named it Abuelita to honour my late grandmother. She was born in Argentina and immigrated to South Africa with her parents as a young woman. Spanish was her home language and you could always hear her talk away to herself in Spanish when she thought no one was listening. That is where we found the inspiration for our name. The word “Abuelita” translates into “Grandmother”.

My grandparents acquired the plot in the late seventies. When their 9 children were all grown up and moved out of the house, my grandparents Charlie & Doreen Versfeld decided to settle on a smaller piece of land. My uncles, father and grandfather built a portion of the house and it is filled with memories for the whole family. My Grandparents watched their grandchildren play under these camel thorn trees and slowly grow up into the adults they all are now.

In 1986 my father bought the property from my grandparents and it has been part of our family for the past 34 years. I hope to raise my own grand children here one day and to share the the rich heritage of our family.
